Introduction

Part I. German Policies, University Features, University Typeas and Educational Systems

Students from China are eager to get further education in Germany and they hope we can briefly introduce the German policies towards foreign students in Germany.
In order to meet the requirements in the economic, trade, cultural and academic communications with foreign countries, the German government takes the future in mind and continuously made a series of modifications in its foreign cultural policies, especially the policies concerning foreign students, in the recent years. It takes various kinds of actions to attract talented youths from other countries to study in Germany and provides very favorable conditions for foreign students and youths to stay in Germany and engage in study for academic degrees or academic researches. In recent years, the ratio of foreign students in the colleges and universities in Germany has been increasing successively. As planned, the number would reach 10% of the total, about 280,000 students.
For this, many German colleges and universities have made some adjustments or modifications to their syllabi and course arrangements. And some international degree programmes taught in German, English or both German and English are provided for some majors. Furthermore, there is also a new way in obtaining an academic degree. You can either study directly for the Master’s Degree (Diplom, Magister), or you can follow the newly innovated method to study for a new Bachelor’s Degree (Bachelor) and then for a Master’s Degree (Master) in some of the colleges and universities. After obtaining the Master’s Degree, you can also continue to study for a Doctor’s Degree (Doktor).
