International Degree Programmes in Germany

How many colleges and universities in Germany are there schoolteaching with English or English and German international degree programmes?

Starting from 1997, International Degree Programmes are provided in more and more colleges and universities in Germany and the number of such programmes has reached nearly 3,000. The courses are taught in German, English or both English and German. The students can study for the Bachelor’s Degree, the Master’s Degree or the Doctor’s Degree. Bilingual courses are often taught in one kind of language for the first year and in the other kind of language in the second year.


What kind of subjects and majors are provided in German colleges and Universities?
According to the preliminary statistics, the main subjects and majors available are listed below.

How are the entrance qualification, the requirements in language and the study term of International Degree Programmes?

A student apply to study for a Bachelor’s Degree shall be an undergraduates in colleges or universities who has successfully passed the college entrance examination and has finished at least three full semesters of study, a student apply to study for a Master’s Degree shall have a Bachelor’s Degree and a student apply to study for a Doctor’s Degree shall have a Master’s Degree.

For educational courses taught in German, it is required that the student shall pass the DSH or TestDaf examination. For educational courses taught in English or both English and German, it is required that the student shall provide his or her TOEFL score and the score shall be above 550 to 580 as appropriate. For some majors the student is required to have some basic knowledge in German (200 to 400 class hours) but it is not required for him or her to pass the DSH or TestDaF. And higher requirements in German are necessary for some majors of arts.

The study period is different according to different majors and different diplomas. Usually, 6 semesters are required for a Bachelor’s Degree, 3 to 5 semesters are required for a Master’s Degree and 6 semesters are required for a Doctor’s Degree.
