Geography

Yingkou is located in the south of Liaoning Province, on the northeastern coast of Bohai Gulf. It stretches from 121ì 56’ east to 123 ì 02’ east of longitude and 39 ì 55’ north to 40 ì 56’ north of latitude. As a link between the cities in the middle of Liaoning Province and the economic region of Liaodong Penisula, Yingkou is 160 kilometers to Shenyang or Dalian, and it takes 90 minutes to drive to one of some 9 cities of Liaoning Province.

History

Yingkou is a very beautiful and charming coastal city with the history of over 280,000 years. In the Paleolithic Time, the ancestors were beginning to live and multiply on the land of Yingkou, and left behind them a lot of human culture sites and historic sites.

In 1984, the archaeologists excavated fossils of intact skulls of the ape men from Jin Niu Shan Hill (Golden Cattle Hill) in the east part of the City.

Since 1864, Yingkou began to start trading with foreign countries. It was the first trading port in northeast China and one of the five earliest trading ports in China at that time.

Sightseeing highlights

Yingkou has a lot of natural and humanized scenery and the tourism resources  after  development for years, a sightseeing belt  in the city has been built  such as:

- Crescent Bay and Fairy Island, together with other 3 bathing beaches, like pearls scattered along the 96-km coastline

- Xiongyue Hot Springs and Shuangtai Hot Springs, with the sea to the front and mountains in the background

- Jinniushan Hill Ape Relics, Westen Fort, Lengyangchan Temple, God Temple, Bell and Drum Tower, which have seen the rise and fall of different dynasties.

In the year of 1984, a piece of skull of ape-man was found in Jinniushan Hill. The archaeological study shows that the skull excavated here is more evolved than Beijing cave man, it is one of the Chinese ape-man populations transited from erect man to wise man. This discovery was awarded as the world top 10 scientific development progress in the same year. In the year of 1988, it is confirmed as the State important cultural heritage protective site. In the year of 2000, it is awarded as one of the 100 discoveries in the 20the century. Now Jin Niu Shan exhibition hall has been completed and opens every day. Welcome people from all part of the world to visit Jin Niu Shan and have a look at the Chinese ape-man’s living condition etc..

-Western Fort, build in 1882 and completed in1888, was one of the important projects for sea defense in northeast China in Qing Dynasty. It was approved as educational bases both for patriotism and revolutionary traditions by liaoning Province in 1963. And now it becomes a tourist area graded 2A of the state.
The fort takes 60 thousands m2 with special architectural designs. The whole fort shapes like凸, and contains artillery platform, fort gates, surrounding wall, fort moat, corn tower, camps and hidden artilleries. The platform has been compacted with yellow soil, black soil, sand, lime and polished glutinous rice. The fort was seriously damaged by Sino-Japanese war taken place in 1895.

Festivals

"China Yingkou Wang'ershan • Mother's Day" is one of the top ten local festivals, and also a local, mass and folk cultural festivals well-known over the country.

On the plain of Liao Nan, there is an old city called Xun Yue. In the east of the city located alone hill, surrounding with orchards. On the top of the hill stands a grey brick tower, looked like a kind mother, looking forward to the return of her son. People now call it Wang'er Shan Hill, meaning to look forward to the return of the son.

Now, the people in Xiong Yue are still keeping this customs to memorize their kind and lovely mother. Every Sunday in May each year, they will have a carnival to celebrate the mother's day. Some people even set steles to show their esteem for their own mothers.

Economy

Yingkou's mineral resources in different kinds are very rich. The city is not only the magnesium metropolis, but also teems with  fine quality fruits, paddy and aquatic products, etc. Yingkou's communications is very convenient with    Zhong-Chang Railway, Harbin-Dalian Highway and Shengyang-Dalian Expressway passing through the whole area. One  city, two ports accelerates the regional economic development. The port is one of the ten largest ports in China, the city is the best landing point for foreign enterprises to enter to the marketplace in Northeast part of China, and is an access for the domestic enterprises in the region to hug the rest of the world.
